Minister of the Interior Lucian Bode declared on Monday that 7,000 fines worth a combined 1.6 billion lei have been handed down on Saturday alone to the companies found in breach of the health protection rules; Bode asked the Liberal leaders to set in place a law allowing the suspension of the activity of non-compliant companies, according to AGERPRES.

"We find that a - luckily - small part of the population still does not follow the rules. The structures of the Interior Ministry had an intense activity and alone on Saturday we checked over 5,000 companies and more than 84,000 people. We handed down almost 7,000 sanctions and yet we see that certain clubs do not follow the rules. In the meeting of the Executive Bureau I asked Liberal Chairman Ludovic Orban to table to the coalition the legal possibility to suspend the activity of the rule-breaking companies, in addition to the sanctions provided for by Law No. 55/2020," Bode said after the meeting of the Executive Bureau of the National Liberal Party.

He said that there are two options: one - to amend to this effect the bill on the approval of the OUG amending Law No. 55 and which is on track for passage in Parliament; the second - for the government to adopt a relevant draft regulatory act.

"I think that we are bound to come up with a bill, because according to a ruling of the Constitutional Court, we cannot introduce new restrictions by emergency ordinances. Consequently, we have the second option, for the government to adopt this week a bill that should very clearly regulate under what circumstances a company can have its business suspended and the sanctions faced by the law-breaking companies," Bode said.
