Romanian tennis player Irina Begu qualified on Thursday for the semifinals of the WTA 125 tournament in Parma (Italy), with total prize money worth 100,000 euros, after a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) win over Hungarian player Anna Bondar (27 years old, ranked 89th in the WTA).
Begu (34 years old, WTA's 83rd) earned a hard-fought victory after nearly three hours of play (2 hours and 53 minutes).
The two players were tied in their head-to-head matches prior to Thursday's encounter. Irina had won 6-4, 6-2 in the first round at Roland Garros in 2023, while Anna got her revenge earlier this year in the second round of qualifying in Miami, with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/5).
Irina Begu, the eighth seed, secured a check for 5,000 euros and 49 WTA points.
In the semifinals, Begu will face Canadian player Victoria Mboko (18 years old, WTA's 156th).
