The execution of the general consolidated budget for January 2026 ended with a surplus of 850 million lei, namely 0.04% of GDP, compared with a deficit of 11.01 billion lei, or 0.58% of GDP, recorded in January 2025, the Finance Ministry (MF) announced on Friday.

According to the source, this is the first January budget execution to post a surplus in the past seven years, the previous one having been recorded in 2019.

This development reflects fiscal consolidation based on improved revenue collection and rigorous management of public expenditure.

'The results recorded in the first month of the year confirm the effectiveness of measures to broaden the tax base and strengthen financial discipline. It is essential that we have managed to increase revenues by almost 18%, while maintaining strict control over current expenditure. At the same time, January's figures must be interpreted with moderation and responsibility, and fiscal and budgetary discipline must be maintained throughout the year, including through the 2026 budget, which we will finalise shortly. Our priority remains the efficient management of public finance and securing sources of economic growth, both through the implementation of the recovery measures package and through the financing of investments from European funds and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, which represent the engine of sustainable growth for the Romanian economy,' said Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare.
