Former independent candidate for Romania's president Calin Georgescu rode the neo-legionary wave and was backed by sympathizers of this movement in Romania, representative of the Romanian Jewish community in Parliament, MP Silviu Vexler said on Wednesday during debates on the simple motion filed by the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians against the Minister of the Interior.
"I have carefully read the motion and I treat it with all due respect, as any parliamentary procedure should be. (...) However, I must say this, because the disinformation circulated in these pages must be pointed out, because the spread of disinformation in the public space must be condemned: an attempt is hereby made to draw a parallel or blur the lines between the people who have been or are active in the French Legion, the French Republic's Foreign Legion, and the legionary movement in Romania. Yet these are two completely different things. (...) Whether we like it or not, whether you accept it or not, the former candidate for the presidency of Romania, Calin Georgescu, was raised and supported by the sympathizers of the neo-legionary movements in Romania. It's not even an interpretable opinion, this is not even my personal opinion," declared the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania (FCER).
According to the lawmaker, some of those arrested by police instigated the execution of members of the Jewish communities in Romania.
Georgescu, Vexler said, is "a candidate who, like some of our fellow MPs today, embraced [marshal] Ion Antonescu as a national hero, claimed that the legionary movement in Romania was the movement of the country's rebirth and consider all those who committed the Holocaust in Romania to be national heroes. These are not, please note, personal opinions. You will find all this on the personal and official pages, including those of the former candidate for Romania's presidency," Silviu Vexler emphasized.
"For those who don't know", he mentioned that "the legionary movement was a paramilitary and criminal, terrorist, fascist and anti-Semitic organization, which is essentially characterized by one thing: atrocities, inhumane acts and persecutions."
"Also, the mystical-religious and anti-Semitic delirium of some politicians cannot change the reality and historical facts in any way. (...) Mr. Minister Predoiu, I want to thank you for everything you have done, I want to thank the Ministry of the Interior, the Romanian Police and all the other subordinate substructures for the correct way in which they understood to step in and combat extremism, and protect democracy in Romania. I want to thank the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Protection and Security Service and all the other institutions for defending and shielding democracy every day. As I believe that each of us should do," the FCER president said.
