The Romanian Judo Federation (FRJ) announced on Thursday on its official website that Romania will host the European Mixed Team Judo Championships for the first time in 2027, with the competition set to take place at the Polivalenta Hall in Cluj-Napoca.
"For the first time since the introduction of the mixed team event in the Olympic programme, Romania will organise a European Judo Championship in this category, after the Romanian Judo Federation received official confirmation from the European Judo Union for the 2027 edition. The competition will take place at a key moment in the Olympic cycle, when the points earned will directly affect world rankings and Olympic qualification. The major event will be held in Cluj-Napoca, at the BT Arena, one of the most modern multipurpose halls in Romania. Following a meeting between the Romanian Judo Federation delegation and the leadership of the National Sports Agency, the agency expressed its unconditional support for the organisation of the competition, confirming the involvement of Romanian authorities in carrying out this major international project," according to the quoted website.
The decision was confirmed within the 77th Ordinary Congress of the European Judo Union, held in Las Palmas, Spain, where Romania was represented by FRJ President Florin Bercean and Deputy Secretary General Eduard Zgorcea.
The Romanian Judo Federation believes that being awarded the organisation of the 2027 European Senior Mixed Team Championships by the EJU represents a clear recognition of the professionalism, credibility and organisational capacity demonstrated in recent years.
"The importance of this event is heightened by the fact that the 2027 edition takes place one year before the Olympic Games, at a time when all top nations will compete for crucial points in the Olympic and world rankings, which will directly influence the qualification and the positioning of national teams on the international stage. Hosting the European Senior Mixed Team Championships strengthens Romania's position on the map of major European competitions and marks a key step in developing international relations between the Romanian Judo Federation and continental and global bodies, confirming Romania's active and respected role in the leadership structures of European judo. The Romanian Judo Federation reiterates its firm commitment to performance, organisational excellence and the sustainable development of Romanian judo, both at sporting and institutional levels," the Romanian Judo Federation website mentioned.
