July slaughtering increases in poultry, decreases in cattle, pig, sheep and goat
Livestock slaughtering increased in July, but decreased in cattle, pigs, sheep and goats compared to the same month last year, official statistics released on Monday show.
According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), during the period under review, carcass weight increased in sheep and goats and poultry, while it decreased in cattle and pigs.
As far as slaughtering is concerned, official data show that the number of heads of cattle in July was 26.772 million (compared to 25.252 million in July 2022), of which 25.433 million heads were reported by specialised industrial units (slaughterhouses).
At the same time, during the period under review, 42,000 cattle were slaughtered, 270,000 pigs and 327,000 sheep and goats.
Also, in terms of carcass quantity, a quantity of 44,143 tonnes of poultry was recorded in July 2023, 23,419 tonnes for pigs, 6,759 tonnes for cattle and 4,602 tonnes for sheep and goats.
Compared to June 2023, in July this year the number of slaughterings and carcass weight increased in pigs and sheep and goats, but decreased in cattle and poultry.
The data for slaughterhouses were obtained through exhaustive statistical research carried out by the INS, and for farms without legal personality, from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR). The information collected refers to slaughterings exclusively for consumption, the INS points out.
