According to a press release from the Ministry of Justice (MJ) sent to AGERPRES on Thursday, on the sidelines of the Eleventh Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in Doha, Qatar, the Romanian delegation, led by Justice Minister Radu Marinescu, held a bilateral meeting with the Japanese delegation, led by H.E. Mr. Kaifu Atsushi, the Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, alongside representatives from Japan's Ministry of Justice.
"The discussions focused on common priorities in the field of justice and on strengthening the bilateral partnership, with an emphasis on recidivism prevention and the exchange of best practices in social reintegration policies," the press release said.
The press release also noted that the situation of a Romanian citizen detained in a Japanese prison was addressed, in the context of respecting fundamental rights and applicable international standards.
During the dialogue, officials from both sides acknowledged and appreciated the contribution of experts from Romania's Ministry of Justice to working formats under the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), where model strategies for reducing recidivism, initiated by the Japanese side, were negotiated. The ministry adds that this cooperation contributed to the completion of the document known as the Kyoto Model Strategies, adopted by consensus at the 34th session of the Commission for Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, held from 19 to 23 May, co-sponsored, among others, by Japan and Romania.
According to the adopted resolution, UNODC was mandated to develop training materials on recidivism reduction and to disseminate information on successful practices, taking into account the experiences of member states, the Ministry of Justice said.
