Political party leaders on Friday discussed with President Nicusor Dan the composition of the future government and the option for a political prime minister was agreed, with the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) disagreeing with the government rotation, UDMR national leader Kelemen Hunor told Agerpres.
He said that political talks will continue on Monday and reaffirmed the need to conclude a coalition agreement that could be concluded in the upcoming period.
"We discussed first of all what we should do in the upcoming days and at what pace, in order to have a governing program, a coalition agreement. And, as the colleagues on taxation and deficit reductions have started to work in a group of specialists, starting Monday, we will also work on the other areas, in the same way, in distinct groups, to set the action guidelines. We established that where measures have a high impact, we should state in the government agenda how much we can establish the details, of course, and when we make the decisions. So, we need a detailed agreement, and we have to prepare it next week. An effort is needed from everyone to see what those nuances, those areas where we cannot understand each other, at the level of specialists, are. After that, of course, if necessary, we move to the political level. That was the biggest part of the discussion, because if we manage to outline the action guidelines and a government agenda, then it is easier to go further and establish the other details," said Kelemen.
As for the future governing formula, he said that no name of a prime minister was discussed, but only about the fact that there will be a political prime minister.
"We discussed a little bit how each of us sees the future governing formula and especially in terms of having a political prime minister or a technocrat. We all agreed that we need a political prime minister, because the act of governing is a political act and that prime minister must be backed by a majority. The problem with a rotating PM: we had it before, and I don't think it was a success. And I said that from our point of view the rotation is out of question, we do not support that and we will continue the political discussions starting Monday with colleagues Ilie Bolojan, Sorin Grindeanu, Dominic Fritz and we will also go into the other details regarding the composition of the government and all other aspects related to the government. Today we did not discuss the name of the prime minister, the structure, or the positions because for now we are quite far from discussing such aspects."
According to Kelemen, after Pentecost there could be a political agreement.
"Next week we should have, towards the end of the week, outlined the governing agenda or at least those aspects where everyone agrees and on the political side to have a uniform approach. But I believe that next week these details can be discussed, if we really want to have a consistent and detailed agenda and a viable and coherent coalition," said Kelemen.
