More than 25,000 Sri Lankans are currently working in Romania, Sri Lanka's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, said on Monday during a joint press appearance with Romania's Foreign Minister Oana Toiu.

The Sri Lankan official signed a Memorandum of Understanding on labour cooperation at the Ministry of Labour.

"There are over 25,000 Sri Lankans working here. They are very interested in Romania, and that is precisely the reason for my visit. Following the signing of this protocol, we expect bilateral trade and other bilateral activities to intensify," Vijitha Herath said.

For her part, Oana Toiu noted that the Government is introducing changes to labour legislation concerning workers from outside the European Union. "Romanian economic operators appreciate the work of these employees, and we are also discussing, of course, their rights during their stay in Romania," she explained.

Economic exchanges between the two countries amount to more than 40 million euro, the Romanian minister added, also highlighting the importance of promoting tourism in both countries.
