The Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration (MDLPA) approved, by ministerial order, the funding of works to strengthen, rehabilitate and modernise the indoor swimming and diving pools at the 'Lia Manoliu' National Sports Complex, the line minister, Cseke Attila, announced.
According to an MDLPA press release, the works will be carried out over a built area of 12,000 square metres, with a height regime of B+TB+GF (basement, technical basement and ground floor). The estimated value of the investment is almost 100 million lei, and the implementation period is 30 months, of which six months are allocated to the design stage.
'Representing a sporting legacy of more than 50 years, the modernisation of the pools will not only be a gain for elite athletes, but also for the community. It will be an investment in public health, in the education of young people and in preserving Romania's sporting tradition,' Cseke Attila said, as quoted in the MDLPA press release.
In addition to the strengthening, rehabilitation and modernisation works, the complex will be made more energy efficient. The heating systems will also be rehabilitated, a new ventilation system will be installed, the exterior joinery will be replaced and low-energy lighting fixtures will be fitted. At the same time, the water filtration and treatment systems will be rehabilitated and boreholes will be drilled to ensure the supply of groundwater to the pools, the cited source added.
In addition, stands with a capacity of 70 and 110 people respectively will be installed.
Built between 1968 and 1971, this complex, the only one of its kind in Bucharest, is intended for the training of athletes, some of whom went on to become well-known figures in Romanian sport. However, at present, the infrastructure no longer meets the necessary safety and performance standards and has been non-functional for years, the MDLPA further mentioned.
