The Pediatric Liver Transplant Centre at the "Grigore Alexandrescu" Children's Emergency Hospital was inaugurated on Thursday in the presence of the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, told Agerpres.

"It is just marking the end of an activity that started in 2022 in the first part of the year, when we decided to do everything possible so that a first pediatric hospital in Romania can develop a capacity related to transplantation. We, as the Ministry of Health, we helped the hospital with investments of about 10 million lei needed for the equipment both at the level of the operating room, the intensive care unit, the pathological anatomy laboratory facility. There are other investments to come for a mobile CT, if I'm not mistaken, which will soon be installed. The most difficult thing, as is obvious to everyone, is that we have to have a human resource that is trained for this," said the Minister.

Rafila said that the team from the "Grigore Alexandrescu" Hospital will continue to work with the doctors from the Fundeni Clinical Institute.

He said that, from the information he has, approximately 10 liver transplants are performed in children in a year.

Professor Irinel Popescu, PhD, specified that the team of doctors from the Fundeni Clinical Institute will be present at the first interventions that will be performed at the "Grigore Alexandrescu" Hospital.

For his part, Professor Vlad Brasoveanu, PhD, mentioned that three types of liver transplants will be performed at the Grigore Alexandrescu Hospital: from a cadaveric donor, split (division of the liver) and liver transplant from a living donor.

Lecturer Laura Balanescu, PhD, who will lead the Liver Transplant Centre, stated that there are already patients included in the transplant list, one of whom has a very rare metabolic disease.
