State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) Violeta Musat is attending on Monday in Brussels the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting, where topics of major interest for the future of European agriculture and fisheries, affecting Romanian farmers and producers, will be discussed.

According to a MADR release sent to AGERPRES, the main points on the agenda are aimed at the post 2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP): food security and the targeting of direct support, recent developments in agri-food trade, including trade relations between the European Union and Ukraine and the determination of fishing opportunities in the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea for 2026, 2027 and 2028.

Within a public session, the agriculture ministers from the EU member states will hold a strategic debate on the post 2027 CAP, focusing on food security and the targeting of direct support to farmers. "The discussions will be based on the European Commission's proposals regarding: the post 2027 CAP regulation; the Regulation on the common market organisation; another important topic on the agenda is trade in the agricultural sector, especially the trade relations between the European Union and Ukraine," the MADR release mentioned.

The ministers will also review recent developments and the impact of trade agreements on the European agri-food sector, in the context of the Council's decision to reduce or eliminate customs duties for several agri-food products from Ukraine.

Regarding the fisheries component, the ministers will exchange views on: the European Commission's proposal for setting fishing opportunities in the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea for 2026, 2027 and 2028; and the draft plan for fishing opportunities in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea for 2026. Agriculture and fisheries ministers will discuss these documents based on materials provided by the European Commission, the relevant Ministry mentioned.

Moreover, the Council will also address a range of other matters, including: the outcomes of the "One Health" Conference, which will be presented by the Danish Presidency in a public session; and the European Commission's Annual Report on simplification, implementation and enforcement of EU legislation regarding animal health and welfare, plants and plant health, food and feed safety.

"By participating in these debates, the MADR reaffirms its commitment to actively contribute to strengthening food security, supporting farmers and promoting a resilient agriculture capable of meeting future challenges," the release said.
