The Romanian Diplomatic Institute is organising, from 19 January - 19 February, a professional development and training programme in sports diplomacy, aimed at deepening understanding of how sport can support foreign policy objectives.
"By strengthening the expertise in the area of sports diplomacy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeks to integrate this instrument, alongside cultural, educational and scientific diplomacy, in support of Romania's foreign policy objectives," according to a Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) release sent to AGERPRES on Sunday.
The MAE initiative comes in the context of the marking, in 2026, of the Nadia Comaneci Year, a symbol of excellence, performance and Romania's international recognition. Nadia Comaneci's historic achievement continues to represent one of Romania's strongest forms of symbolic capital.
"Sport has a unique potential to generate bridges of dialogue, to convey universal values and to strengthen relations between states and societies, which makes sports diplomacy both a relevant and effective instrument of foreign policy and a durable vector of positive image for Romania," the MAE release said.
The course organised by the Romanian Diplomatic Institute brings together diplomats and experts who explore the key mechanisms through which the potential of sport can be capitalised on as an instrument of public diplomacy, strategic communication and promotion of Romania's image at international level.
The MAE mentioned that it will continue to support professional training initiatives and the exchange of expertise in the area of sports diplomacy, in cooperation with national and international partners, as part of a broader effort to promote a modern diplomacy adapted to current global challenges.
