MAE/Travel warning: Bulgaria, temporary restriction of traffic of vehicles over 12 tons between December 24 and January 4

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs Romanian citizens who are in, transiting or intending to travel to Bulgaria that, between December 24, 2025 and January 4, 2026, the circulation of vehicles over 12 tons will be temporarily restricted along the entire length of the Trakia and Struma motorways, as well as on the Sofia - Dermant section and the Hemus motorway.

The restriction does not apply to vehicles that provide public passenger transport, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday.

On December 30, 2025, the circulation of heavy vehicles leaving Sofia will be suspended between 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

On January 4, 2026, the circulation of vehicles over 12 tons in the direction of travel towards Sofia will be suspended between 12:00 and 20:00.

According to the cited source, on the Hemus and Struma highways, traffic restrictions do not apply to vehicles over 12 tons transporting dangerous goods (ADR), live animals, perishable food products, as well as temperature-controlled goods.

On the Trakia highway, in the section from the Ihtiman substation (km 34) to the Vakarel substation (km 23), in the direction of travel towards Sofia, traffic restrictions do not apply to vehicles over 12 tons carrying dangerous goods (ADR).

In the Blagoevgrad region, on December 24, between 10:00 and 20:00, reversible traffic will be introduced on the I-1/ E-79 Sofia - Kulata road section, at the intersection with the Struma highway and the Simitli intersection. At the same time, two lanes will be provided in the direction of travel towards Kulata and one lane in the direction towards Sofia.
