Supporting agriculture, tourism, healthcare and local culture, as well as the rehabilitation of places of worship that are hundreds of years old and listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, are priorities for 2026, president of the Maramures County Council (CJ) Gabriel Zetea said on Monday.
He underlined the importance of these investments, which are to be implemented in the coming period, during a discussion with director general of the North-West Regional Development Agency Marcel Bolos.
'Among the main topics discussed were support for agriculture and farmers through the development of the Maramures Brown Cattle Centre in Sighetu Marmatiei, including research, education and the promotion of local products, the creation of cold storage centres for vegetables, fruit and dairy products to support local producers, and investments in culture and youth through the establishment of a Maramures Cultural Centre - House of Youth,' Gabriel Zetea said.
The wooden churches listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites and Polyclinic No. 2 in Baia Mare will be included in an extensive rehabilitation programme.
'The eight wooden churches included in the UNESCO heritage list will undergo rehabilitation as part of efforts to protect the county's cultural identity. The County Museum of Art and Polyclinic No. 2 in the municipality of Baia Mare will also be modernised. We are also considering mobility and tourism projects such as the Mocanita narrow-gauge railway, the Viseu-Borsa cycle path, bypass roads, bridges over the Tisa and other strategic connections. We are developing medical infrastructure through the construction of a new hospital wing and a modern operating block at the Dr Constantin Opris' County Emergency Hospital in Baia Mare,' Gabriel Zetea added.
The CJ president also mentioned that he is promoting an approach based on institutional cooperation and partnership with local authorities, with many of the projects analysed originating from proposals put forward by communities in the area.
