Independence means the freedom to decide and to use the tools that our European membership offers us, to build hospitals, schools, infrastructure and a competitive economy not against somebody, but for the people, using cooperation as a means, not as a weakness, Minister of Investment and European Projects Marcel Bolos wrote on Facebook on Saturday, on the occasion of National Independence Day - May 10.

"For me, as Minister of European Funds, independence means to have the freedom to decide and to use the tools that our European membership gives us. To build hospitals, schools, infrastructure and a competitive economy not against somebody, but for the people - using cooperation as a means, not a weakness. Today is a day of celebration that should remind us of this: Romania can make a difference - if it does not confuse autonomy with isolation. Happy birthday, dear Romanians! Happy birthday, Romania!", the minister pointed out.

He says, however, that freedom is not guaranteed and can easily be lost when it falls into the hands of fear. No developed democratic state functions in the logic of autarky, while well-negotiated openness is the common trait of all relevant global actors..

"What does independence mean today? How do we translate this history lesson? Won with blood, defended at the cost of the lives of dozens of generations. It is hard to perceive in a world where freedom seems a given. But freedom is not guaranteed. It can easily be lost, especially when it falls into the hands of fear, cynicism or those who sell isolation under the guise of national pride. I see this rhetoric more and more: "we could manage on our own". Is self-reliance a country strategy? Does it attract investment, bring progress? No democratic, modern and developed state functions in the logic of autarchy. Openness - well-negotiated, with identity and clarity of purpose - is the common trait of all relevant global actors," Marcel Bolos added.

The Romanian official believes that Romania is not made to isolate itself but to matter and for this to happen, it needs to be where the decisions are made, not on the sidelines.

"Domestic resources are valuable, but without investments, know-how, networks, they remain untapped. Young people know this. They don't want closed borders, fears wrapped in the tricolour flag and window-dressing nostalgia. They want a future. And our independence only makes sense if it is about them," the cited minister also wrote. AGERPRES
