Iasi Mayor Mihai Chirica is denying public accusations of improprieties related to the organisation of the Esports World Championship in Iasi, saying that the competition took place August 24 - September 4, 2023, under a partnership between the Iasi City Hall and the International Esports Federation (IESF).

"The city of Iasi followed a validation and licencing process within the IESF, a body that has a general assembly of 140 countries, culminating with the official announcement of receiving the quality of organizing city in November 2021, at the Championship in Eilat - Israel. With the same management and the same regulations used in the competition in the City of Iasi, the IESF organised internationally successful championships in cities such as Seoul and Busan, South Korea; Jakarta and Bali, Indonesia; Baku, Azerbaijan; Eilat, Israel, etc., events with thousands of participants, tens of millions of followers and partners among the most important players in the global gaming and IT industry," Chirica says in a press release.

He adds that according to the decision of the Local Council, the Iasi 2020 Municipal Sports Club had "the capacity of organiser" and "concluded all the documents and legal papers necessary for the organisation of the event", and the Iasi City Hall did not make any purchase, did not conclude any contract and did not make any payment for any of the business operators involved in holding the championship.

According to him, for the Esports World Championship held in 2023 in Iasi there was a considerable organisational and logistical effort involving 700 gamers from 110 countries, 140 delegates of the national Esports federations, 590 technicians for stages, broadcasting, etc. and 550 volunteers, including 150 from outside Iasi.

"At the same time, in addition to the considerable international visibility, holding the Esports World Championship generated hundred percent occupancy rates at all hotels in Iasi and increasing both the turnover of the local HoReCa industry and the revenue of the local administration."
