Social Democratic Party (PSD) MEP Victor Negrescu said that the United States' decision to withdraw part of its troops from Romania represents 'a warning signal' that must be treated with the utmost seriousness.
'This adjustment of the American presence on NATO's Eastern Flank, including some forces stationed at Mihail Kogalniceanu, has direct implications for the security of Romania and the Black Sea region. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Defence must provide explanations to clarify the situation and propose swift solutions to strengthen relations with the United States and Romania's security,' Negrescu wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.
In his view, it is essential to accelerate President Nicusor Dan's visit to the United States.
'In this context, it is vital that President Nicusor Dan's visit to the United States be accelerated and thoroughly prepared, in order to send a clear message: Romania remains a reliable strategic partner; the Black Sea region must remain a priority for NATO, the EU and the United States; and all available European instruments, such as the SAFE programme, must be activated and used to strengthen our defence and security,' the MEP added.
According to him, Europe must take on greater responsibility, while Romania must become a pillar of stability and security on the eastern border of the European Union.
The Ministry of National Defence announced on Wednesday that it had been informed about the resizing of part of the American troops deployed on NATO's Eastern Flank, as part of the process of reassessing the global posture of the US armed forces.
