Defence Minister Radu Miruta met on Monday with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Romania, Giles Portman, with talks focusing, among other issues, on recent developments in the regional security situation.

According to a press release sent to AGERPRES, discussions at the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) headquarters centred on the stage of bilateral defence cooperation, recent regional security developments and the intensification of strategic dialogue to strengthen NATO's deterrence and defence posture on the Eastern Flank, including in the Black Sea region.

The two sides also reaffirmed their shared commitment to supporting Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova amid the security challenges generated by the Russian Federation's war of aggression.

"They reviewed practical options for deepening cooperation in order to develop Romania's defence capabilities, including in the fields of procurement and the strengthening of the national defence industry. At the same time, the importance of the partnership in the Black Sea region, within the Allied framework, was highlighted, as well as the need to continue dialogue between the European Union and the United Kingdom in support of European security," the release reads.

A key topic of discussion was the presence of the Royal Air Force in Romania as part of NATO air policing missions, the ministry said, adding that this contribution represents a strategic component of the Allied commitment to securing the Eastern Flank, particularly in the context of persistent tensions in the Black Sea region.

The officials underlined the importance of the UK-Romania Defence Cooperation Agreement, which strengthens and expands bilateral relations in order to jointly address current strategic challenges, bringing mutual benefits to the two armed forces, the ministry added.

"Romania and the United Kingdom are strategic partners united by common objectives and a firm commitment to strengthening Euro-Atlantic security. We particularly appreciate the United Kingdom's consistent contribution to the security of the Black Sea region and are determined to further develop defence cooperation," the Romanian defence minister was quoted as saying.
