The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the celebration of Africa Day on May 25, a symbol of African unity and the global importance of this continent, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Sunday.

The theme established by the African Union (AU) for the 2025 Africa Day celebration is: "The Year of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparatory Justice."

The theme emphasises the African Union's commitment to promoting freedom, equality, justice and dignity as essential goals for fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of African peoples, by establishing mechanisms for global reparatory justice.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs treats the development of relations with Africa as a priority in Romania's foreign policy, based on partnership and mutual respect. Furthermore, the MAE reaffirms its commitment to the promotion and protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms, to diversity, and to the fight against racism and all forms of intolerance or discrimination.

These key priorities were also emphasised during Romania's participation in the third European Union-African Union ministerial meeting, held in Brussels on May 21, 2025.

As a member state of the European Union, Romania's priorities in developing its relations with African countries are based on solidarity, and the country remains committed to promoting initiatives and projects that support the development of the African continent. Supporting peace and stability in Africa and providing opportunities for young Africans through access to education are defining elements of Romania's approach to African states, as outlined in the Romania-Africa Strategy: A Partnership for the Future through Peace, Development and Education.

Africa Day is celebrated annually on May 25 and marks the date in 1963 when the Organisation of African Unity, the predecessor of the current African Union, was founded.

Each year, the African Union sets a continent-wide theme under which the Africa Day celebrations are organised.
