The Ministry of Home Affairs (MAI) on Tuesday said that there is fake news circulating in the public space alleging to the idea that the process of cancelling the first round of last year's presidential election was premeditated.

"Through social media posts and statements made during a television show, the false and artificially constructed idea that certain departments of the Interior Ministry acted to that end by requested that the stamps be handed over in the same bag with the annulled votes. The model of the voting stamps used for the parliamentary elections was different from the model of the voting stamps used for the presidential election, so those used for the parliamentary election were NOT used for anything else," according to MAI.

MAI says prefectures are not involved, they do not have jurisdiction over the process regarding the operations of handing over and receiving the documents and materials necessary in the voting process, so they could not "ask the polling stations". The operations of handing over/receiving the documents and materials necessary for the voting process are established by a decision of the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC ).

"For the parliamentary election, the BEC established the operations of handing over/receiving the documents and materials necessary for the voting process by Decision 261/D/21.11.2024 (and YES, they are handed over in bags with unused ballots) - art. 3 (5) c. For the presidential elections, the BEC established the operations of handing over/receiving the documents and materials necessary in the voting process by Decision 160/D/17.11.2024 (including clear instructions for the voting stamps to be reused in the 2nd round - they are handed over separately to the county electoral bureaus) - art.3 (4) and art.7 (1)," said MAI.
