Thermometers registered minus 21 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning in Intorsura Buzaului, a locality known as one of Romania's coldest spots.
According to on-duty meteorologist Halada Szilard from the Transylvania-South Sibiu Regional Meteorological Centre, it is the lowest temperature recorded this winter in the country, outside the mountain peaks.
"There were minus 21 degrees Celsius this morning in Intorsura Buzaului, but a warming trend is expected over the next two to three days, after which, from January 17-18, the weather will cool again and there will be more frosty nights, though temperatures will not drop below minus 14-18 degrees Celsius," meteorologist Halada Szilard told AGERPRES.
He confirmed that in recent years there has been a warming trend, with winters being much milder.
The town of Intorsura Buzaului is also dubbed "Little Siberia" due to the extremely low temperatures recorded here each year.
According to meteorologists, on January 8, 2015, Intorsura Buzaului registered minus 34.6 degrees Celsius, and on January 10, 2017, minus 32 degrees Celsius. In 2023, there were three consecutive days of extreme frost: minus 31 degrees on February 9, minus 29 degrees on February 10 and minus 26 degrees on February 11.
The lowest temperature officially recorded in the past half-century in Covasna County was minus 35.8 degrees Celsius on February 8, 2005, in Intorsura Buzaului.
Intorsura Buzaului's mayor Raul Urda told Agerpres that residents are accustomed to severe winters and that no major problems have been reported in the locality due to the low temperatures.
