The number of companies and authorised sole traders (PFA) that entered insolvency in the first five months of this year stood at 3,146, up 13.62% compared with the same period in 2025, when 2,769 insolvencies were recorded, according to data published on the website of the National Trade Register Office (ONRC).
The highest number of companies and authorised sole traders entering insolvency between January 1 and May 31, 2026, was recorded in Bucharest, with 606 cases, an increase of 5.57% compared with the first five months of 2025, agerpres reports.
The next counties in the insolvency ranking were: Bihor, with 212 insolvencies (down 2.75%); Cluj, with 189 (down 1.05%); Timis, with 145 (up 12.40%); Ilfov, with 140 (up 2.19%); and Prahova, with 109 (up 12.37%).
The fewest insolvencies were recorded in Covasna - 14 (up 7.69%); Harghita - 16 (up 14.29%); Botosani - 17 (up 6.25%); Mehedinti - 21 (up 10.53%); Salaj - 21 (down 32.26%); and Teleorman - 22 (up 83.33%).
In May alone, 622 companies and authorised sole traders entered insolvency, with the highest numbers recorded in Bucharest - 119 cases -and the counties of Bihor - 49, Cluj - 38 and Ilfov - 33.
By sector of activity, the largest number of insolvencies was recorded in wholesale and retail trade, with 190 cases (up 352.38% compared with the first five months of 2025), followed by construction, with 171 cases (up 510.71%), and manufacturing, with 99 cases (up 312.50%).
