Over 50 outbreaks of enzootic bovine leukosis have been discovered in Arad County, most of them in the last three weeks, since a testing campaign began.
The head of the Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA) in Arad, Marcel Rosu, told AGERPRES on Friday, that 51 outbreaks of leukosis have been identified and over 100 cows are sick, some of which have already been slaughtered in slaughterhouses. For comparison, 11 outbreaks were detected in the entire year 2024.
"The disease has been present in the Romanian cattle population for the last 35 years. Animals detected with leukosis are slaughtered in slaughterhouses and there are no consumption restrictions for the resulting meat, only for the organs affected by the disease," said Marcel Rosu.
The head of DSVSA Arad emphasised that the measures taken include expanding the testing campaign, slaughtering sick animals and their offspring, and resuming testing after four months.
"Owners who have affected cattle can receive compensation from the state," the same source said.
