Morning temperature low at bitter minus 23 degrees C in Miercurea Ciuc

The temperature plunged Thursday morning to a country low of minus 23 degrees Celsius in the central-eastern city of Miercurea Ciuc.

Udo Reckerth, meteorologist at the Transylvania South - Sibiu Regional Weather Center, told agerpres that temperatures also hit a bitter minus 22 degrees C at Joseni.

Other locations in the grip of a deep winter freeze are Toplita with minus 19 degrees C, the Bucin mountain station - where the measured temperature was minus 14 degrees C, and Odorheiu Secuiesc - minus 10 degrees C.

Such chilling temperatures are not unusual for Harghita County, Romania's coldest region, which is frequently hit by bitter cold snaps in January and February.

According to the cited source, the lowest temperature on record for the day of January 26 in Harghita was in 2006 in Miercurea Ciuc, that had minus 33 degrees C, while on the same day in Toplita the thermometer read minus 28 degrees C; on January 26, 2000 in Joseni the temperature was as low as minus 30 degrees C.

Forecasts show that the arctic freeze will also stay on Thursday night, with country lows hitting between minus 25 and minus 27 degrees C.

This month's lowest temperature in Harghita was registered on January 10 in Miercurea Ciuc: minus 29 degrees C.

The coldest January on record for Harghita was in 1985 when temperatures plunged to minus 38.4 degrees C in Miercurea Ciuc.
