The risk of avalanches in the Rodna, Maramures and Tibles Mountains has increased, and the Mountain Rescue Service has issued a warning of possible avalanches on the mountain, the director of the Maramures County Public Mountain Rescue Service, Dan Benga, informed on Friday evening.

"Considering the large layer of snow accumulated up to 1.5 meters in the mountainous area of Maramures County, as well as the warming in recent days, these cumulative aspects represent a real risk of avalanches and major travel difficulties," Dan Benga said.

According to him, a large avalanche occurred in the Galatiului Pass in the Rodna Mountains.

"In the last 24 hours in Maramures, in the Rodna Mountains, a large avalanche occurred, around 50 - 75 meters wide and 150 - 200 meters long. The entire ridge is loaded and there is a possibility of triggering other avalanches," said Dan Benga.

The director of the Maramures Mountain Rescue Service, Dan Benga, told AGERPRES that mountaineering enthusiasts should avoid alpine ridges because there is a risk of avalanches.

"There are people who are passionate about mountains and climbing, sometimes under difficult conditions, to reach special places. The mountain is extremely dangerous in winter, the weather can change suddenly, visibility can decrease in a short time, and the possibility of avalanches is increased. The layer of snow that has fallen on the mountain is most often much greater than at the foot of the mountain. Those who venture up the mountain must take into account that they are exposing themselves to major risks. My advice is to avoid climbing the mountain during this period", said Dan Benga.
