Generations of Romanians have fought under the tricolour for freedom, dignity and unity, said Minister of National Defence Ionut Mosteanu on Thursday in his message marking National Flag Day.
"Today, on National Flag Day, we honour one of the most powerful symbols of our identity as a people. Under the tricolour, generations of Romanians have fought for freedom, dignity and unity. Today, under the tricolour, our soldiers take their oath, bearing with honour and sacrifice the responsibility of defending the country. As Minister of Defence, I am honoured to work alongside people who wear the flag on their uniforms and in their hearts. I thank them for their courage, loyalty, and dedication to Romania. Happy National Flag Day! Long live Romania!," wrote Minister Mosteanu on Facebook.
National Flag Day was celebrated on Thursday in the capital with a ceremony held in Tricolour Square, near the National Military Circle Palace.
During the event, organised by the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) in partnership with the Prefect's Office of Bucharest and the Bucharest City Hall, the National Flag was blessed by a military priest. Among the officials attending the ceremony were representatives of the Presidential Administration, Parliament, Bucharest Prefect Mugur-Mihai Toader, and the Chief of the Defence Staff. The flag was raised on the square's flagpole to the sound of the National Anthem.
According to the Ministry of National Defence, similar ceremonies will take place in garrisons across the country.
Also, to mark National Flag Day, members of Romania's Invictus team will celebrate the event with an ascent of Omu Peak.
This initiative will culminate in the unfurling of a national flag approximately 100 metres long, by soldiers, Invictus volunteers and civilians, symbolising national unity.
National Flag Day was proclaimed through Law No. 96/1998 and is celebrated annually on 26 June.
