A total of 3,560 cubic metres of illegally logged timber was identified in December 2025 by the National Forest Guard, with damage estimated at approximately RON 2 million, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests (MMAP) announced on Tuesday in a post on its social media page.
According to centralised data, the 3,560 cubic metres of timber unlawfully harvested in a single month account for around 32% of the total volume found to have been illegally exploited throughout 2025, agerpres reports.
Following the inspections carried out, the estimated damage of roughly RON 2 million represents 28% of the total damage assessed for the entire previous year.
"Combating illegal logging is not achieved through statements, but through firm, well-documented inspections and the clear assessment of damages. The results from the first month of the mandate of the chief inspector of the Forest Guard, George Garbacea, show that when there is determination and strict enforcement of the law, the effects are immediate. We will continue to strengthen our inspection capacity and support all measures aimed at protecting the national forest fund," Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu was quoted as saying in the Facebook post.
In the coming period, the National Forest Guard will further strengthen the operational capacity of its territorial structures by increasing the frequency of field inspections, correlating data from IT monitoring systems with on-the-ground operations and firmly applying the sanctions provided by law.
The forthcoming measures are aimed at steadily reducing illegal logging, recover damages and consolidate a predictable and effective control mechanism at national level, the line ministry added.
