National Institute of Public Health announces first death due to flu: 88-year-old woman from Cluj

The National Institute of Public Health announces the first confirmed death with influenza virus this season, in an 88-year-old woman from Cluj, unvaccinated against influenza and with pre-existing medical conditions.

According to the National Center for Monitoring and Control of Communicable Diseases within the National Institute of Public Health, in the week of December 15 - 21 (S 51/2025) there were reported: 102,655 cases of respiratory infections (clinical influenza, IACRS and pneumonia), registering 3.7% more cases compared to the previous week (99,034) and 15.2% more cases compared to the same week of the previous season (89,109), agerpres reports.

The increase in the number of cases from the last seasons (2018-2025, excluding pandemic seasons) was 47.3%.

In the last week, 11,174 clinical influenza cases were registered nationwide, compared to 5,701 registered in the previous week, 5 times more than in the same week of the previous season (2,238) and 6.9 times more than the average of the last 5 seasons (1,623).

By December 21, a number of 1,252,642 flu vaccinations were registered in the National Electronic Vaccination Registry (RENV) (1,227,743 being for population groups that benefit from compensation) of which 5,835 flu vaccinations in authorized community pharmacies.
