The natural increase of Romania's population remained negative in May of this year, the number of deceased persons being 1.7 times higher than that of live births, according to the data published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
"In May 2024, the birth of 11,505 children was registered, down by 387 (-3.3%) compared to April 2024. The number of deaths registered in May 2024 was 19,534 (10,168 male persons and 9,366 female female), with 541 more deaths compared to April 2024, which represents an increase of 2.8% (+3.3% for males and +2.3% for females). The number of deaths of children with the age under 1 year registered in May 2024 was 65 children, down by 6 compared to April 2024. The natural increase remained negative (-8029) in May 2024, the number of deceased persons being 1.7 times more higher than that of live births," INS mentions.
In the analyzed interval, the number of live births was lower by 2,219 (-16.2%), compared to the same month in 2023, while the number of deaths decreased by 652 people (-3.2%), and the number of children under the age of one who died was 14 lower.
In May 2024, the death of 9,907 people (5,048 male and 4,859 female) was recorded in the urban environment, and the death of 9,627 people (5,120 men and 4,507 women) in the rural environment.
Compared to the same month in 2023, the number of registered deaths decreased by 2.4% in the urban environment (-5.2% in the case of males and +0.6% in the case of females) and by 4% in rural areas (-2.8% in the case of male persons and -5.5% in the case of female persons).
INS data show that the number of marriages was, in May 2024, 734 (-7%) lower than the one recorded in the same month of the previous year.
By final court decisions and by the agreement of the spouses (administratively or by notarial procedure), during the reference period, the number of divorces decreased by 642 (-29%).A
