The MEVAC European project that successfully wrapped up on Monday will contribute to strengthening Romania's medical airlift capacity through the acquisition of a specialized medical module that can be fitted on aircraft of the Ministry of National Defense (MApN), the Emergency Management Department (DSU) said on Monday, informs Agerpres.
"Today, August 25, was the closing event of the project 'Upgrade of the Romanian MEVAC capacity', implemented by the Emergency Management Inspectorate General under the coordination of the Emergency Management Department. The ceremony at the ''Comandor Aviator Gheorghe Banciulescu' 90th Air Transport Base saw the participation of high-ranking representatives of the Ministry of the Interior, the National Defense Ministry, the Health Ministry, and the European Commission's Representation to Romania," informs DSU.
The main purpose of the project was to modernize Romania's airborne medical evacuation solutions through the acquisition of a specialized medical module compatible with MApN aircraft. This will allow for a faster and more efficient response in the event of disasters or major incidents, both nationally and within the framework of the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).
The module allows the simultaneous transport of up to four critical patients, providing medical care equivalent to that of an intensive care unit.
"The project, with a total budget of 909,500 euros, received 682,125 euros in non-reimbursable European funding. Its implementation resulted in the increase in the EU's fast response capacity in major crisis situations, ensuring a rapid deployment of forces in such an event; the existing standard operating procedures were reviewed in order to establish the appropriate needs regarding responsibilities and the information flow," the cited source says.
The project also included training for medical personnel, by the organization of two theoretical and practical sessions with the MEVAC module, as well as a training and mobilization exercise.
"This project represents an important step towards strengthening Romania's capacity to manage large-scale emergencies, reconfirming our country's commitment to the security and health objectives of the European Union. The results achieved will have a direct life-saving contribution, protecting citizens in the face of future challenges," the DSU concludes.
