In a world often affected by relativism, individualism, moral confusion and the dissolution of spiritual benchmarks, the Romanian Orthodox Church (BOR) remains one of the fundamental institutions in which Romanians place their trust, cultivating the unity of the Romanian people around language, cultural memory, the sentiment of belonging to a common past and to a spiritual community, President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday in his anniversary message for BOR Patriarch Daniel.

"The history of Romania and of Europe - Europa Christiana - reminds us that nations mature and manage to offer future generations a meaningful legacy when they preserve, thanks to faith, a living conscience capable of resisting injustice and any form of degradation of the public sphere dialogue. The presence of the Church therefore contributes, legitimately and necessarily, to the moral health of society, to rebuilding trust and solidarity," the head of the state said, according to news agency Basilica.

According to the president, the Patriarch's anniversary "is a day of celebration for the entire Church, for the communities of believers in the country and in the diaspora, gathered around the values that the Church and the Orthodox tradition cultivate in society: faith, truth, solidarity, harmonious coexistence, pluralism, the assumption of our spiritual roots".

Nicusor Dan notes that, under the Patriarch's leadership, the Romanian Orthodox Church has taken up the mission of being constantly involved in education, philanthropy, supporting vulnerable persons and cultivating a conscience of compassion, "encouraging with generosity and wisdom a climate of peaceful coexistence among the religious denominations and Romania's recognized national minorities".

"I appreciate your balanced and reconciliatory vision, which inspires our communities with hope for a better future. I am convinced that Romania and all believers in the country and in the diaspora will always find in the Church and its servants luminous examples of dedication, poise and confidence in what we are bound to accomplish together, for the present and for the generations that will follow us," the head of the state conveyed to the BOR Patriarch in his message.

Patriarch Daniel was born on July 22, 1951, in the village of Dobresti, Bara commune, Timis County.
