No form of aggression against medical staff can be tolerated in a society that respects the medical profession and understands the role of the doctor, the President of the College of Physicians of Romania, Catalina Poiana, said on Tuesday.

The College of Physicians of Romania is calling for a public campaign to prevent violence against doctors and has appealed to the National Audiovisual Council (CNA) for support.

"Violence against doctors is unacceptable. No form of aggression against medical staff can be tolerated in a society that respects the medical profession and understands the role of the doctor. Honest and professional doctors practise their profession with responsibility, dedication and respect for the patient, often in difficult conditions and, in certain situations, under considerable professional pressure caused by multiple factors," Catalina Poiana wrote on Facebook.

According to her, doctors' safety must be guaranteed and any act of violence must be sanctioned in accordance with the law.

"As President of the College of Physicians of Romania, my message is this: protecting doctors is not optional; it is essential for the safety of medical practice and for the proper functioning of the healthcare system. I know and understand that the vast majority of the population recognises the role of the doctor and respects the profession. However, I am also aware that such cases of violence against doctors do occur, and they can be reduced and stopped through joint efforts - by the medical profession, the authorities and society as a whole. Together, we must say STOP to violence and aggression against doctors," the CMR President stressed.

Her message comes after a doctor at the Emergency Receiving Unit (UPU) in Targu Jiu was assaulted on Monday evening by a patient.

"The incident that took place last night at the hospital in Targu Jiu is deeply regrettable and unacceptable. Assaulting medical staff cannot be justified under any circumstances and all necessary legal measures must be taken. (...) Protecting the physical integrity of doctors, as well as respecting their professional dignity, must be a priority both for the management of medical institutions and for society as a whole. We call on the authorities to implement measures to protect medical staff. We also call on members of the public who interact with the healthcare system - patients and relatives - to show responsibility, engage in dialogue and demonstrate mutual respect," the CMR said on its Facebook page.

The College of Physicians of Romania has expressed its willingness to provide support to the doctor involved in the incident in Targu Jiu while carrying out professional duties.
