Our relationship with Romania has never been more important, declared Darryl Nirenberg, nominated for Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Romania, during his hearing on Wednesday before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
"Romania is a key NATO ally, strategically located on the Black Sea and bordering Ukraine. It has great opportunities for American companies, and it has the potential to be a game changer when it comes to energy resources. Our relationship with Romania has never been more important," the diplomat said during the hearing that was broadcast live on the committee's website.
"If confirmed, I commit to advancing President Trump's America First agenda and working to make America stronger, safer, and more prosperous. I will first focus on ensuring the safety of Americans serving, living, and working, visiting there. I will work to deepen our military and security partnership, and I will focus on strengthening our trade and investment relationship. I will promote U.S. exports, advocate on behalf of American companies, and encourage investments that create jobs in the United States," declared Nirenberg.
"This nomination is the honor of a lifetime, for which I am grateful to President Trump and Secretary [of State] Marco Rubio. I look forward, if confirmed, to working closely with this committee to strengthen our relationship with Romania and promote America's national interests abroad," the diplomat also said.
He stressed that his nomination for ambassador to Romania is "deeply meaningful," as his grandparents emigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe, and he himself, during the time he served on the very committee before which he was now heard, witnessed history unfold when the Berlin Wall fell and the Romanian people won their freedom from communism. "Should I be confirmed, it would bring it all full circle," he remarked.
Darryl Nirenberg was accompanied to the hearing by his wife, Lori, who was also a member of the Senate staff, and by their children Drew and Kelly.
Darryl Nirenberg was nominated in May as the United States ambassador to Romania by President Donald Trump and is currently going through the procedural stages required for Senate confirmation as ambassador.
