Romania's population is going through a sharp aging process, similar to the global trend, given that, in July 2025, the number of people over 65 exceeded the number of children under 14 by 35.4%, according to data from an insurance company.

The demographic aging index increased from 126.8 (as of January 1, 2024) to 132.4 (as of January 1, 2025) elderly people per 100 young people, agerpres reports.

"Demographic projections show that the population aged 55+ will continue to grow in the coming years. This reality highlights the need for solutions dedicated to seniors, an important and rapidly expanding segment, for which there is currently no complete insurance offer on the Romanian market," an NN press release states.

Recent studies by the insurer show that Romanians over 55 perceive retirement as a time of increased vulnerability, in which they lose medical benefits offered by employers, but at the same time, the need for health and protection becomes a constant concern. Cancer diagnosis remains the main fear, and the need for age-appropriate medical services is growing.

At the same time, NN studies show that Romanians over 55 are thinking about financial support for their family in the event of death or how they can leave something behind for their children and grandchildren.

The biggest problem of the medical system is, for 44% of respondents, the cost of access to treatment in hospitals in Romania, and 70% claim that Romanians cannot afford quality medical treatment.

In Romania, 56% of urban seniors say they would invest in a health insurance product that would support both them and their families, the cited source states.

In this context, NN Life Insurance launched NN Silver Care, a new insurance product dedicated to people between the ages of 55 and 75, who want to have protection and a safety net as they age, or to leave financial support to their loved ones. The new insurance offers a combination of life, health and prevention protection.

The policy includes basic coverage for death from any cause, with insured amounts between 5,000 and 50,000 lei, and for cancer diagnosis, with insured amounts between 10,000 and 50,000 RON. In addition, the policy also offers an optional investment component, which allows the direction of savings or amounts reached maturity from other NN contracts to the NN Classic and NN Dinamic funds, with preferential fees for seniors.

Monthly premiums start at 91 lei and depend on the age at which the client enters the insurance, the insured amount and the coverages chosen.

NN is a group of financial entities that offers insurance and private pension products. The group began its activity in Romania in 1997.
