Joining the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is not only a diplomatic target, but also a transformative process for Romania, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu said on Thursday.
"We are working for better public policies, for a modern economy and for a state that offers opportunities and prosperity to its citizens, as well as a good future at home," the Romanian chief diplomat wrote in a Facebook post.
The minister announced that on Thursday Romania obtained the formal opinion of the OECD Investment Committee. It is the 24th opinion out of the 25 necessary for Romania's full accession.
"Romania is just one step away from joining the OECD, after some very welcome news today. We have obtained the formal opinion of the OECD Investment Committee. It is the 24th opinion out of the 25 necessary for Romania's full accession and further proof that, beyond the noise of the day, we manage to advance on strategic objectives where calm and professionalism guide the discussion", mentioned Oana Toiu.
She explained that the technical milestones are long-term, being a guarantee of stability and a signal of trust for investors who choose Romania and "for this reason, we cannot afford to make mistakes in the home stretch".
The minister said that currently there are elements of unpredictability for the business milieu and "we must be honest in this regard".
"But it is all the more necessary to preserve and build benchmarks that make future plans in Romania solid, and joining the OECD is such a project," the Romanian chief diplomat added.
At the same time, Oana Toiu mentioned that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated the technical steps of the institutions involved in the evaluation process for the Investment Committee, namely: the National Bank of Romania, the Financial Supervisory Authority, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, the Romanian Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Energy, the Competition Council, the Authority for the Public Supervision of Statutory Audit Activity and the National Union of Bars in Romania.
"Each one contributed to the substantiation of technical responses and the presentation of relevant reforms. OECD accession proceeded this year at the fastest pace in more than a decade, and the credit for this is strongly linked to the involvement and coherence of the approach of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and President Nicusor Dan", the Romanian minister of foreign affairs also said.
