The mayor of Craiova, Lia Olguta Vasilescu, stated on Thursday that the Romanian Government has a lot of debts to the local authorities, and they are forced to allocate money for people with disabilities, for the salaries of employees in cultural institutions, for teachers' commutes, for nursing homes or for co-financing projects with European funds.

"The 2% did not come from the Romanian Government for the salaries of employees in culture, which is why we had to supplement it here. Just as they did not come from the Government for people with disabilities, these are the Government's obligations. We put money for teachers' commuting, we put money for repairs to educational institutions, we put money for the Home for the Elderly, which again did not come from the Romanian Government. There are a lot of debts that the Government has towards local authorities. In our case, there are still 32 million lei that we paid for European funds, under the conditions in which this money should have come from the Romanian Government, because we absorbed it," said Olguta Vasilescu during the Craiova Local Council meeting, agerpres reports.

She also pointed out that the Executive stopped funding for investments, which is why many work contracts were suspended, and an example in this regard is the Garlesti Passage in Craiova, an investment of about 136 million lei, which was to be carried out by the National Investment Company (CNI), of which the municipality was to bear about 21 million RON.

"Construction at the Garlesti Passage should have started as early as this summer, since the CNI tender was finalized and the financing contract should have been signed. Given that the Romanian Government has stopped all financing contracts, we are unable to leave the financing that we had prepared. I am currently taking steps to the Romanian Government to approve us starting the Garlesti Passage from our own funds, at least with the 20% co-financing part that would be set aside for all the objectives that belong to the local authorities. I hope it is approved, because I would not want to wait until the Government decides that it has the money to start this construction. So we are really rushing with it and we have already requested that this happen. Let's hope that they will modify "The legislation allows us to do this. We have 45 million RON 'in house," the mayor of Craiova also said.
