Minister of education Ligia Deca on Wednesday specified that one school out of three offers children a free meal during school hours beginning with the new school year in Romania.

"We significantly increased the number of schools, from 350, in 2022, to 450, and, as of January 2024, once with the entering into force of the "Healthy Meal" National Programme, we went up to more than 1,200 schools and, again, in April, to more than 1,400," Ligia Deca stated, after the Government meeting.

She said that 800 schools are to be added to these numbers, which are included in the National Programme for Reducing School Dropout.

"Basically, right now, we have more than 2,200 school who benefit from this programme, which means approximately 650,000 children get to eat a healthy meal during school hours, every day, and we are going to continue until all schools will be able to offer a meal during school hours," said Deca.
