Only 15% of education units in Romania renovated by 2020
The thorough energy renovation of schools must become a priority, in the context in which only 15% of the built area occupied by buildings of education units has been renovated by 2020, say experts from the Romania Eficienta (Efficient Romania) programme, run by Energy Policy Group (EPG).
Nationwide, there are 18,000 buildings belonging to education institutions, occupying a total built area of over 16.6 million square metres, of which only 15% has been renovated by 2020, according to data contained in the National Strategy for Long-Term Renovation, published in November 2020.
In the same context, a 2021 EPG study shows that the age and inefficiency of these buildings is reflected in high energy bills: schools are the highest energy consumers (354 kWh/sqm/year), in other sectors consumption ranges from 200 to 250 kWh/sqm/year.
However, an analysis carried out in 2020 by EPG, based on data from the Ministry of Education, collected through the siiir.edu.ro platform, showed that 1,874 school units had no running water in any of the buildings belonging to those units.
In the view of energy experts, a first step to achieving a high level of energy performance in school buildings is to renovate the building envelope to reduce heat loss, and another is to install shading systems such as adjustable external blinds.
Romania Eficienta (Efficient Romania) is a nationwide private project, carried out by Energy Policy Group (EPG) in partnership and with funding from OMV Petrom. The project started in the summer of 2019 and consists of a national programme to promote energy efficiency.
