The Forta Dreptei (Right Force) Party could merge with the National Liberal Party (PNL) next year, a possibility that has been discussed with the leader of the Liberals, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, party chairman Ludovic Orban announced on Friday.
He added that 'this is not about a return to the PNL' and that alongside him there are 'many anti-PSD [Social Democratic Party] liberals.'
'This is not about a return. For me to return to the party, there needs to be a merger process, an amalgamation by absorption, through which the PNL would absorb the Right Force. At present, I have had a discussion with the chairman of the National Liberal Party, Ilie Bolojan. In this discussion we more or less agreed that there is openness to start these talks. But they will be negotiations that must be conducted properly, that is, as they should be. There must be a negotiation mandate adopted by the statutory bodies of both parties, and only then can the actual negotiations begin, which must be finalised through a merger protocol that has to be validated by the congresses of the two parties. Alongside me there are many right-wing, anti-PSD liberals, quality people, people who can contribute to strengthening the PNL and especially to ensuring a correct direction for the PNL,' Ludovic Orban said on RFI.
Asked whether it is possible for the merger between Forta Dreptei and the PNL to take place next year, the former prime minister replied: 'It is possible.'
'Certainly, I will continue the dialogue with the party president. There must be a vote in the National Political Bureau of the PNL on such a negotiation mandate and we will do the same in a similar party structure. These dates, when the steps will actually begin, will be made public. I have never hidden my intentions from the press,' the Forta Dreptei leader added.
