The number of packaging units marked with the SGR logo collected in May this year stood at 438 million, Romanians having returned more than 1.8 billion containers of this kind since the beginning of the year, according to data from the RetuRo Barometer, published on Thursday.
"Since the beginning of the year, more than 1.8 billion packaging units with money guarantee have been returned by consumers, and RetuRO has handed over 141,000 tonnes of packaging to recyclers. Almost 438 million SGR packaging was collected in May, representing 73% of the amount put on the market. With an average collection rate of over 80% in the last 10 months, the Guarantee-Return System continues to support Romania's transition towards a sustainable consumption model, mobilizing millions of Romanians to adopt a responsible behavior towards the environment," reads a press release issued by the administrator of the Deposit-Refund System (SGR) sent to AGERPRES.
RetuRO Sistem Garantie Returnare S.A. is a company operating on a not-for-profit principle, meaning any profit generated from the collection of beverage packaging is reinvested solely into the development of the SGR system. The company was created by a consortium of three private shareholders: the Romanian Brewers' Association for the Environment (30%), the Soft Drink Producers' Association for Sustainability (30%), and the Retailers' Association for the Environment (20%), as well as one public shareholder, the Romanian state, represented by the Ministry of Environment, Waters, and Forests (20%).
The company operates with exclusively private financing and its role is to ensure transparency on the quantities of beverage packaging put on the market and returned by consumers, contributing to Romania's sustainable development through responsible management of packaging waste in order to achieve the recycling targets imposed on Romania by the European Union.
