Operators of the Special Telecommunications Service (STS) received and processed 2,256 calls to the single emergency number 112 between Tuesday evening at 21:00 and Wednesday at 10:00, in the context of the Code Red alert for heavy rainfall issued by the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) for Bucharest and five other counties.

According to an STS press release, the county emergency call centres for Bucharest-Ilfov and the counties of Calarasi, Constanta and Ialomita recorded a significant increase in the number of calls from citizens.

More than 200 calls were received and processed at the 112 Bucharest-Ilfov centre alone, between 08:00 and 09:00 on Wednesday morning.

Most of the calls to 112 related to the red weather warning concerned emergencies handled by ISU-SMURD crews and reported flooding, fallen trees and stranded persons.

The highest workload was registered at the Bucharest-Ilfov emergency call centre, with 1,505 calls, followed by Constanta with 354 and Giurgiu with 166.

The Special Telecommunications Service stated that it continuously adapts its technical and operational measures as required by the situation, in order to ensure the rapid transfer of each case to the responsible agencies — Ambulance, ISU-SMURD, Police, Gendarmerie and Mountain Rescue.
