Border policemen in southern Giurgiu County discovered, in the trunk of a vehicle, the sum of 483.740 pounds sterling, money that a Turkish citizen was attempting to remove from the country, without respecting legal norms, informs the General Inspectorate of the Border Police (IGPF) on Tuesday.
According to a release sent, on September 5, at Border Crossing Point (PTF) Giurgiu, on the direction exiting the country, a Romanian citizen, driver of a BMW automobile, registered in Romania, together with a passenger, Turkish citizen, 57 years old turned up to conduct border formalities. The border policemen conducted a thorough search of the vehicle. Thus, in the trunk of the car they discovered several cardboard boxes, held by tape, in which there were pounds sterling bills, totaling 483,740 pounds sterling.
In the investigation, the Turkish citizen said the money belongs to him, but he cannot present documents attesting the fact, or to justify their provenance.
Due to suspicions regarding the legality of the provenance and the destination of the money, the entire sum was seized in view of continuing checks, and in the case investigations are being made under the coordination of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Giurgiu Tribunal, under the aspects of money laundering and tax evasion, with legal measures to be enforced at the end of the case, the IGPF release also shows, Agerpres informs.
