The Parliament's leadership decided on Wednesday to send to the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) the prior approval for initiating the procedure for awarding contracts related to the 'Main Battle Tank' endowment program, Stage I (phase 2) and Stage II.
The defense committees of the two Chambers approved the MApN request on October 20.
"The main purpose of equipping tank structures with high-performance equipment is to create a credible combat and deterrence capability, to ensure technical interoperability with similar structures of the armies of NATO member countries and, if necessary, to ensure an adequate response capacity," the MApN request sent to Parliament states.
Stage I (phase 2) of the "Main Battle Tank" acquisition program has an estimated value of $458.2 million excluding VAT.
Stage II of the "Main Battle Tank" acquisition program aims at the acquisition of 216 tanks and 76 derivatives (16 evacuation tractors, 44 mobile assault bridges and 16 minesweepers) for the equipment of tank and infantry structures within the Land Forces, as well as the acquisition of logistical support and specific training and education equipment.
"The second stage of the endowment program envisages measures to protect Romania's essential national security interests by carrying out technological and industrial cooperation operations, namely the manufacturing/integration in the country of the final product, including subsystems, as well as maintenance on the national territory," states the document of the Defense Committees of the two Chambers, transmitted to the joint Standing Bureaus.
The second stage of the endowment program has an estimated value of 6,488,340,000 euros excluding VAT.
