Some people from the Ukrainian town of Reni, which was attacked by Russian drones on Wednesday night, have found support in Tulcea county at the Ukrainian Refugee Multicultural Education Center, set up last year by the territorial branch of the Romanian Red Cross, and there is a possibility that support could be provided to people in Ukraine affected by the war unleashed by Russia.
According to Georgetei Bielaly, an employee of the education center, last night's drone attack was one of the most powerful in recent times for the population of the town of Reni, located on the Danube, near the Romanian-Moldovan border of Giurgiulesti, in the county of Galati.
"For three hours, 32 drones came, 16 of them hit houses, cars, people. The hospitals were full of traumatized people. For three hours, it was a situation in which mentally normal people could go out of their minds," said Georgeta Bielaly, for AGERPRES.
Five women from Reni town asked her for help and she mentioned that through the center set up by the Romanian Red Cross they can receive both psychological assistance, but also access to resources to ensure basic needs - food, accommodation, medical care.
"Most of the people who come here are in need, they are old people who are homeless, they are sick, people with children who have nowhere to go back to, they are disabled, there are some categories of people who need a little support and empathy," said Liliana Ivanova, employee of the Romanian Red Cross territorial branch.
The Ukrainian Refugee Multicultural Education Center, set up last year by the Romanian Red Cross, is financially supported through collaborative grants from the Swiss Confederation, through the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration, and the British Disasters Emergency Committee, through the British Red Cross and the International Federation of the Red Cross.
After the Russian attack on Ukrainian cities on the Danube, recorded on Wednesday night, the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) announced that, around 00.30, an air target briefly crossed the national airspace near Reni, Ukraine, about one kilometer inland, heading towards the Ukrainian airspace.
Following investigations by the authorities, fragments of Geran 1/2 drones, used by the Russian Federation in attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure on the Danube, were found in two areas in the county of Galati in Romania.
The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, also announced that two similar drones have breached the airspace of the country she leads and exploded in the Taraclia district, and the country's Foreign Ministry warned that Chisinau will "unilaterally denounce the Moldovan-Russian intergovernmental agreement on the establishment and operation of cultural centers, concluded in 1998" in "response to these provocations".
