The National Bucharest Airports Corporation (CNAB) has started a tender for the design and execution of a photovoltaic park that will be built in the vicinity of Runway 2 of the Henri Coanda Bucharest International Airport, as well as for its connection to the airport's power plant.

According to CNAB, the park is designed to cover at least 70% of the airport's annual consumption from renewable sources.

The project will provide an integrated and uniform solution that will cover both to the current electricity usage of the Henri Coanda Airport, and to the subsequent developments of the airport infrastructure, by gradually increasing the capacities of production and storage of energy from renewable sources.

"The project represents an essential step in the process of accelerated modernisation of the Henri Coanda Bucharest International Airport. Investments in the production of energy from renewable sources directly contribute to increasing the airport's energy autonomy, reducing operating costs, integration into a complex monitoring and control system, while reducing the impact on the environment," according to CNAB General Manager Bogdan Mindrescu.

The photovoltaic park will be strategically located in the vicinity of Runway 2 of the airport, in an area in the public domain of the state and administered by CNAB, on which terminals or hangars cannot be built.

For the implementation of the project, a reflection study will be carried out, so that the panels are positioned without affecting the visibility of the pilots at take-off and landing or the operation of aeronautical equipment. They will also have a low altitude regime, so as not to influence air navigation.

The power generation facility will be connected to the airport's power plant and have a total power of 31.5 MW equipped with a storage system of a capacity of 30 MWh. The facility will be built in two stages. The first stage provides for an installed production capacity of 12.6 MW, with storage of 17.88 MWh.

The estimated value of the contract is RON 134.614 million, excluding VAT.

For this stage, CNAB submitted the project for funding under the programme "Supporting investments in new facilities for the generation of power from renewable sources for the self-consumption of aerodromes, including energy storage systems", funded under the Modernisation Fund and managed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. A funding contract has already been signed, and the eligible amount is RON 132.044 million, excluding VAT.

The design and construction of the power park will be carried out in a maximum of 18 months.

Stage 1 is said to be the first concrete step of the strategic project that will ensure, in the medium and long term, both a reduction in carbon emissions and the maintenance of safety and operational continuity for the national critical infrastructure of the Henri Coanda Airport.
