Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said that it would take at least one year for the implementation of progressive taxation, and that Romania is currently not prepared for that.

He told RFI Romania that the subject has not been addressed in recent months in the governing coalition.

"Of course, each party can declare what it deems appropriate. In real terms, this formula, which is indeed applied in many European countries, needs at least a year, a year and a half of changes in the financial systems, in order to be applied. And we are not ready for this matter now. It is difficult to take many measures that mean, on the one hand, fiscal consolidation, combatting tax evasion and everything that means the fiscal packages that have been adopted and, at the same time, to do other things that will turn your systems upside down," said Bolojan.

In another development, the prime minister said that scandals "do not help" any of the ruling parties. Opinion polls are "momentary pictures," Bolojan said.

"We must be aware that, when you take adjustment measures, you should not expect your confidence in opinion polls to increase. You have to wait for the results, to stabilise things. (...) If you right injustices, if we close all the measures that mean tightening the belt and the state, the public apparatus, I am convinced that, to one extent or another, each of the parties could win, but the biggest win will be for the country," Bolojan said.
