Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Friday that the moment the current government can no longer do what is necessary and loses support, another one will follow for certain, adding that if the current coalition breaks down, a different majority could form, given the parliamentary arithmetic of half plus one.
"If I had not assumed responsibility, I would not have accepted the position of prime minister. And since I accepted this role knowing the serious problems Romania faces, I assure you I am not afraid of any party, political leader or anyone else. I am a realist, and the fact that I am in this office, means I must do what stands within my power for our country - avoiding unnecessary conflict, seeking political agreement, maintaining balance in the state and correcting what must be corrected. This is what I have tried to do. And I expect all political leaders to show the same responsibility," Bolojan told broadcaster Europa FM.
Asked whether it would not be easier to leave governing to the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, he replied that the moment this government can no longer act, another will take its place: "When this government can no longer do what is necessary and loses support, another ruling lineup will take over for certain. And for me, believe me, that would be a relief. And yes, if this coalition stops functioning, given that a half-plus-one majority exists, we could see another coalition."
Asked what will happen if the administrative reform package does not pass next week, Bolojan said: "We must adopt these packages and the budget."
"We have no other option. (...) It is our responsibility towards the country to finalise the budget as quickly as possible," the prime minister added.
