Germany is Romania's most important trading partner and its main foreign investor, the government said on Monday, ahead of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's official visit to Berlin at the invitation of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
"The Prime Minister's visit is part of the excellent relationship between Romania and Germany which, although not formally framed as a Strategic Partnership, has a strategic character and focuses on current and prospective areas of interest such as economic and trade cooperation, European affairs and security," the government said in a statement.
Germany remains Romania's top trading partner, accounting for more than 20% of total Romanian exports. In 2024, bilateral trade reached around 42 billion euros, including 19 billion euros in exports and 23 billion euros in imports, the government noted.
"At the end of 2024, Germany was the leading foreign investor in the Romanian economy, maintaining its dominant position. German-resident companies have investments in Romania exceeding 18.66 billion euros, representing almost 15% of total foreign direct investment," the statement added.
During his January 27 - 28 visit, Bolojan will meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with whom he will hold a joint press conference. He is also scheduled to meet the Vice-President of the Bundestag, Andrea Lindholz, CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, and Chair of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.
The visit also includes an important economic component, with meetings planned with the President of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Peter Adrian, and the Director General of the Federation of German Industries, Tanja Gönner, the release further states.
Bolojan will additionally meet Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, in the context of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, marking the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. He will visit the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and meet Uwe Neumarker, Director of the Memorial Foundation.
The Prime Minister will also meet representatives of the Romanian community at the Romanian Embassy. Romanians constitute the fourth-largest foreign community in Germany, numbering around 910,000, of whom more than 90,000 have obtained German citizenship. In addition, approximately 500,000 ethnic Germans originating from Romania are well integrated in German society, the government said.
The delegation that will accompany Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan includes Minister of National Defense Radu Miruta, the Head of the Prime Minister's Chancellery Mihai Jurca, Chief of Defense Staff Gen. Gheorghita Vlad, MP Ovidiu Gant of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, the Secretary of State with the Prime Minister's Chancellery Dragos Hotea, and State Counselor with the Prime Minister's Chancellery Raul Gutin.
