Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said that a wage law is needed that should provide for both increases and cuts where appropriate.

The prime minister estimated, however, that there would be reluctance to implement 'things that do not sound good,' which is why the law would enter into force in stages.

'As regards the wage law: yes, we will have to do it. I would like to see a wage law that includes salary increases where they are needed. But we may also see salary cuts where things have gone too far. We have been scarred by bad experiences for 20 years and we know that sometimes our determination and our capacity to do things that do not sound good are very low. I have reservations that through the wage law that will be adopted we will also see corrections in a negative sense. That is why we will have to adopt this wage law, but its entry into force will probably be phased,' the prime minister said at the General Assembly of the Association of Communes in Romania.

He stressed that the staff reductions envisaged for local public administration 'are not done with an axe,' but take into account the number of inhabitants and the level of responsibility.

'Those of us who know public administration know that in many localities, especially small ones, certain positions cannot be fully loaded. And if in many places people can work on half-time contracts, I see no problem in two neighbouring communes sharing an official, so that services for citizens are delivered just as well, but at a much lower cost,' the prime minister said.
